Working Working Working. Also, Comic and Art recs

Hi everyone - still here, still beavering away, still not using this properly as a journal. Oh well.

Work's been nasty recently with two huge projects on deadlines, and I had to pull a couple of all-nighters to manage. Got there, whew, and am basking a little this weekend in the absence of horrid deadlines. Well, apart from all the usual self-imposed fannish ones!

Stuff I'm working on at the moment
I just finished a crossover fic - SGA/something else, but reveals aren't for a week, so more then.

Did another SGA podfic cover, which I'll post to AO3 once the podfic itself gets posted.

SGA Reversebang story No. 1. A (USA-based) 1790 John/Rodney Regency bodice-ripper, whee! I'm having a lot of fun with the language, with Georgette Heyer-type glossaries open in tabs, plus this helpful etymology site that's great to check if words were in use back in 1790 or not. Also having FAR TOO MUCH FUN writing Regency language porn! Also, bottom Rodney, just for a change! Not that it's BDSM. Just, it's a bodice-ripper, right? And Rodney's kind of the girl. Except not. And it was time to make more use of his ass. Well, John certainly thought so.

SGA Reversebang story No. 2. I have a bit of an Outline, and will start on it tomorrow. I'm trying to do both the Reversebang stories in fits and starts one after another, so I don't get too carried away with one and then leave myself no time for the second. I have a schedule! I'm even almost sticking to it, which is kind of amazing.

Also I signed up today for the due South-C6D BIg Bang, yay! I'm planning a multi-media pop-up map of Fraser/Ray and Dief's trip to find the Hand of Franklin. Thank all the fucks, it doesn't post until October.

Still eating low-carb and feeling a lot healthier (only reason I can do stuff like all-nighters, bad for me though they are).
Also, have started gradually making myself do a bit of exercise, which I'm very lazy about. Mostly abs/core stuff for my back, and it's helping, I think.

Reading and Recs:
I'm reading ALL THE COMICS ALL THE TIME! Well, apart from fanfic, of course. I read them as Kindle ebooks on my pad - these are all Amazon/ComiXology ones - you can try things out at the ComiXology site
  • SAGA by Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples. Have read all there is and have to await the next collated volume. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Brilliant sci-Fi/fantasy, extraordinary characters, always new and surprising.
  • PAPER GIRLS by Brian K Vaughan, Cliff Chiang and others. Great plot, totally engaging teenage girl protagonists. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Aliens in suburbia!! - or are they?
  • ARCHIE by Mark Waid and Fiona Staples. Cute and a nice read if stressed by RL crap. A modernisation of the old Archie comics. Engaging characters, very white bread middle America.
  • NORTH 40 by Aaron Williams and Fiona Staples. Amazing art, as ever with Staples, but this one's HORROR. Be warned. I can't read too much at once.
  • THE LOSERS by Andy Diggle and Jock. My third re-read of this cult classic. Decided to get them on Kindle as the paper versions were coming loose at the bindings. Brilliant, hard-hitting, wonderful team and characters, a roller-coaster plot with a complex ending where not everyone survives, very violent. Love them so much. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
  • TALES FROM THE LOOP. (Ur Varselklotet - link to SS's tumblr) by Simon Stålenhag. This isn't a comic, but is a world built from art. Mecurtin's been posting Hugo Art recs on tumblr and this guy blew me away. He's done 2 books and they're very hard to get hold of (publisher's site all in Swedish, only expensive HC version, no e-version etc.) Swedish creator, an amazingly good pro artist (absolute realism without the obsessive fussiness of hyper-real painters) who's built this world where the Swedish government builds a huge underground particle accelerator, and very strange things start to happen above it. Machines become sentient and build themselves into weird half mechanical half-organic automatons, dinosaurs and giant animals dodge trucks on the road, etc. The wonderful thing is the absolute accuracy of the world - I've been to Scandinavia and this is small-town/rural/urban Sweden to the life. With added weirdness, but he shows people adapting to it all and incorporating all the strangeness into daily life, even though some are very strange, and probably dangerous. It's hypnotic stuff - can't recommend it highly enough. Getting the book is a bit of a mission, but possible (1 of 2 - the next's still in kickstarter) - but you can see the art at his tumblr or just google-image search on "simon stalenhag".

Bye for now! Hope you're all OK. *sends you a cupcake er, delicious high-protein snack* :)
